“Como roble, you nunca me quebre!“-Martin Manuel Mascorro
Growing up, I always heard my Dad say that the Mascorros were like the “robles,” that we don’t break easily. Of course, as a kid, what did I know what it meant, right? But as I grew older and had more meaningful conversations with my father about our family of origin, I came to realize why he would often compare himself to a “roble.”
I am living proof that we indeed are like the “roble:” we are strong, resilient, and enduring. The oak tree’s ability to withstand harsh conditions and still grow tall and sturdy is a metaphor for our strength and stability. It also symbolizes wisdom, honor, and growth despite whatever challenges we face. Yes, that is who I truly believe I am, as my father used to say about us, Mascorros.
Which leads me to my point for today’s blog. I was listening to my nephew’s latest song on YouTube, and when I heard his lyrics, “Como roble, yo nunca me quebre,” I got chills! I wondered if he had ever heard my father utter those exact words. You see, my father passed in 2009 when Martin was an adolescent, so I texted him and asked if he had ever heard my father say anything about the “roble.” His response was “No, Tia, he never told me anything about los robles!” All I could really do was shake my head, as my heart sang for joy.
In my latest novel, which will be coming out by the end of the year (or possibly sooner), I write about the Mascorros and the Garcias. In it, I mention the hardships my ancestors encountered, and specifically, I write about the concept of genetic memory.
There are times when certain songs will lead to awe of the Holy Spirit and God’s greater scheme in life. There are times when I am convinced that genetic memory is a real phenomenon. There are times when I wholeheartedly believe in fate. Then there are other times that I just smile and thank my Lord and Savior Jesus for his undying love and grace for those of us who believe.
I invite you to listen to “Puertas” Martin’s latest song, in which he sings of his love and faith in God despite the trials and tribulations he has faced in his young life.
Martin sings from his heart, having lost his earthly father not too long ago. He knows that in the music industry, there will be opposition, jealousy, closed doors; yet he is like Paul as he reminds us that when we are faced with opposition, we are to:
a.) Stand firm in our opposition, b.) don’t be frightened by those who oppose us, c.) remember it’s a gift not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for him, and d.) finally, to learn from his struggles, and to be an example as we also spread the gospel as did Paul (Philippians 1:27-30). In the song, Martin also alludes to John 20:29 in which we are to believe in what is not seen!
Martin, in his creative way, is doing just that! Join me and let’s help him spread the good news with his latest song!

Well written post. Robles is to me like a palm tree that bends but never ever break. We display faith that will never ever broken in times navigating through storms of life.

Prima,
I firmly believe the Mascorro are a special group. Words like persistence, strong willed, intelligence or exceptional all come readily to mind.
I do not think it is necessarily genetics. I think what drives us is our values which have been passed on through generations. Did I mention overachievers ? Ahh, yes plenty of those beyond the average….
I hope my humble thoughts can help with your research.

Yes Primo, thank you for your thoughts and our love will only continue to be unbreakable like the robles! xx00xx
